About this piece
A kani saree is woven, never printed. The pattern is coded first in talim — a weaver's notation that records every colour change, row by row — and then built into the cloth with small wooden bobbins called kanis, one weft pass at a time. There is no shuttle thrown across the width. This piece carries a half-drop boteh across a madder ground, with ivory and indigo cores and a saffron speckle through the curl. Because each repeat is placed by hand, no two are identical; the drift is the signature of the loom rather than a flaw in it.
